The good folks @ Download Squad pointed me to Qumana @ the right time. This is an app that lets you post to and manage your blog from the desktop rather than with a web-based interface.
Even here, I have had error messages and its been frustrating...
Hopefully I'll find a solution for this soon.

Madhavan's Promo about Sankara Nethralaya
I went to study here, oh! over 20 yrs ago...
The education I received there was phenomenal. I have always admired the staff there. Sometimes, my young and rebellious attitude did land me in hot water, but I always tried to learn from experience.
Today, I'm going to be a proud clinician based on the solid footing these folks gave me.
As far as Madhavan and his promo goes - I feel that he is not natural.... but who cares.

Blonde Joke an Optometrist would like...
Three blondes were all applying for the
last available position on the Texas Highway Patrol. The detective
conducting the interview looked at the three of them and said, “So
y’all want to be cops, huh?”
The blondes all nodded.
The detective got up, opened a file drawer and pulled out a folder.
Sitting back down, he opened it, pulled out a picture, and said, “To be
a police officer, you have to be able to detect. You must be able to
notice things such as distinguishing features and oddities such as
scars and so forth.”
So saying, he stuck the photo in the face of the first blonde and
withdrew it after about two seconds. “Now,” he said, “did you notice
any distinguishing features about this man?”
The blonde immediately said, “Yes, I did. He has only one eye!”
The detective shook his head and said, “Of course he has only one
eye in this picture! It’s a profile of his face! You’re dismissed!”
The first blonde hung her head and walked out of the office.
The detective then turned to the second blonde, stuck the photo in
her face for two seconds, pulled it back and said, “What about you?
Notice anything unusual or outstanding about this man?”
“Yes! He only has one ear!”
The detective put his head in his hands and exclaimed, “Didn’t you
hear what I just told the other lady? This is a profile of the man’s
face! Of course you can only see one ear! You’re excused too!”
The second blonde sheepishly walked out of the office.
The detective turned his attention to the third and last blonde and
said, “This is probably a waste of time, but……” He flashed the photo in
her face for a couple of seconds and withdrew it, saying, “All right,
did you notice anything distinguishing or unusual about this man?”
The blonde said, “I sure did. This man wears contact lenses.”
The detective frowned, took another look at the picture and began
looking at some of the papers in the folder. He looked up at the blonde
with a puzzled expression and said, “You’re absolutely right! His bio
says he wears contacts! How in the world could you tell that by looking
at his picture?”
The blonde rolled her eyes and said, “Well, Helloooo! With only one eye and one ear, he certainly can’t wear glasses.”

I came upon this site today. No need to sign up too!
I have uploaded a couple of docs myself. It seems too good to be real. Very very fast. Easy on the eyes and it even allows documents to be downloaded as MP3 files.
I'm sure they will be torn down for copyright violations very soon. But while it lasts, its a great site...

This started a couple of months back with just Bangalore and now has expanded to 16 cities. I love the new maps feature, where I can zoom into street level!
The other thing I find very useful is the local time on the top Right. Reminds me not to call @ odd hours!
The last time I left for India, I used to ask my siblings about local events - like carnatic music concerts - now I can find them listed right here.

My Business!
In the last few weeks, I have taken the easy road of cutting and pasting some code to get my Daily Dose of DevaranAma. I have added little else because, I have been busy trying to put together a business plan/proposal. This is to have my own optometry practice. So, my days have been spent meeting with realtor's /builders/bankers/attorneys/design staff/architect... you get the point.
It is amazing how quickly the $ add up! of course, everyone wants to make money, as I do too.
One of the challenges has been to figure what to call the new practice... any ideas, please e-mail me.
Here is the layout that I like best:
Get your own Box.net widget and share anywhere!
I should know how big my loan is going to be in the next few weeks. And once we set the ball rolling, there is no turning back.
This is especially unnerving as no one in my family has ever gone into business - we have always taken the 'safe road'. So much so, when I first broached the idea with my dad, his words were 'be careful'. Not what you would expect to hear, but I know him too well to take it as being hurtful....
So, over the next weeks let me continue to post devara nAmas and for those few who chance upon this site, enjoy!

Funny

One of the things I enjoy most on Sundays is reading the newspaper with a hot cuppa. Most of the comics are plain annoying. I just skim through them without as much as a smile. Doonesbury is an exception. This one is fantastic.
Lately, my 5 yr old has joined me in reading. We both have loud (read fake) laughs at the comics...

Udupi Srikrishna Ratri Pooja
A short clip from udupi, a coastal city in Karnataka India.
Krishna is Worshiped fourteen times a day by the swamiji. Of course The first ten take place in the forenoon and the remaining four are the evening services. Towards the end of the day, the Swamiji enters the sanctum sanctorum for the ratri pooja. After chanting the hundred and eight names of the Lord he offers naiveedya consisting of tamarind rice, pan cake, tender coconut, panchakajjaya and betal leaf and nut. He then waves aratis of different kinds. Coming out of the sanctum sanctorum the Swamiji offers worship to the idol of Madhvacharya at the entrance. The musicians known as bhagavatas sing devotional songs along with their disciples and dance according to the rythm. It provides a feast to the eyes.

BBC Person of the year

Time Magazine had 'YOU' as the person of the year. How boring and utterly unimaginative. I would have loved to see Nancy Pelosi, the first woman to head the speakership of the Senate in US history. But, I don't want to get too political here - my rantings shall remain off the blog pages.
One of the first posts I put up on this blog was about Sir Richard Dawkins.
Now, BBC has named him the Person of the Year.
Dawkins talks with Bill Moyers (needs Real Player) about religion in America, evolution and its detractors and science as the best prism through which to understand the mysteries of the universe

Flying Chennai-Delhi in 22 hrs
What should have been a two-and-a-half-hour flight from Chennai to Delhi turned into a 22-hour ordeal for passengers of an Air Deccan flight, thanks to a combination of ‘‘operational reasons’’ and the dreaded Delhi fog.

A Birthday/New Year Gift to myself!

Over the holidays, I used a point and shoot digital camera that worked very well. Espeially because I could stick it in my pocket, carry my son if needed and go through security @ airports. A few days before we were to leave Singapore, my 5 year old wanted to take pictures of fish in a hotel lobby and dropped the camera. Not surprisingly, the lens got jammed and I was quite upset.
I’ve been wanting to buy a prosumer camera for the longest time but I didn’t want to lug all that weight around.
Came back home and researched.
Here Here, Here, Here and Here
Fell in love with the Nikon D40. The replacement for the D50, it keeps the 6.1-megapixel sensor but boasts upgrades to the viewfinder, LCD, metering, processor speed, burst rate, noise suppression, in-camera editing, and user help, in a smaller and lighter package. Now for the really hot feature: The new camera, at $599 with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II AF-S Zoom-Nikkor DX lens, is $100 less than the current D50 with a kit lens.
The D40 will make for a very agile backpacking companion, can’t wait for Spring time.
